I wanna roll with these guys!
One half of Australia's bumbling Dumb and Dumber armed bandits is speaking out about the crime that created headlines around the world for its stupidity and sent him to a US federal prison for four years.
Anthony Prince and Luke Carroll, 19-year-olds from Byron Bay, were in Vail, Colorado, on a working holiday in 2005 when they armed themselves with replica pistols, covered their faces in masks, stormed a Vail bank and fled with $US132,000 ($141,500) in cash. The robbery turned violent when Carroll knocked one of the female bank tellers to the ground.
Prince, in an interview to be aired on the ABC's Australian Story on Monday night, reveals what was going through his head before committing the robbery and absent-mindedly leaving a long trail of clues for the FBI and Vail authorities.
"We didn't really want to rob a bank. We were just talking about it and thinking about it and joking about how we could actually do it and then before we knew it, it just turned serious," Prince said in the interview.
The media dubbed them Dumb and Dumber because they left so much evidence behind, including failing to hide their Australian accents during the robbery. The tellers knew it was Prince and Carroll despite the masks because the Aussies were regular customers.
The trail of clues also included the duo wearing name tags during the hold-up, buying a Rolex watch with $US5 bank notes from a local store soon after the robbery, attempting to buy one-way air tickets to Mexico with cash and tipping a cab driver $US20,000. "I would say we had them identified within eight minutes of the robbery," Detective Ryan Millbern of the Vail Police Department said.
Prince agrees the robbery was foolish.
"You'd have to be retarded to think you can get away with it," Prince admits.
Prince and Carroll, before attempting to catch a flight out of Denver a day after the robbery, also took photos of themselves with the loot, which authorities found on a digital camera and used as key evidence.
"The next day we got to the airport early and we still had too much cash to smuggle through Customs so we decided to chuck it out, but we decided first we'd take some photos of it," Prince said.
"We opened up a few bundles and fanned them out and showed off like idiots and I remember the whole time taking the photos I just had this weird feeling that this was going to come back to haunt me and sure enough it did."
They were arrested in the airport when authorities matched their description to an FBI alert.
Prince and Carroll were released from the Allenwood Federal Correctional Institution in White Deer, Pennsylvania, last year and returned to Australia.
